Hallo alternative: a job conversation, not a language score
Hallo started as a language test, and it is still where the company leads. Contact centres, airlines and language schools use it to get a CEFR score for speaking, writing, reading and listening in more than 100 languages, and the company says it runs over 10 million assessments a year.
A language score tells you the candidate can speak English at B2. It does not tell you what they say when a customer has been charged twice and is angry about it. For support, sales and front desk roles, that conversation is the job.
The short version
- Focus: Hallo grades language proficiency, plus soft skills and coding in separate products. Greet runs a spoken scenario from the job, where the AI plays the customer and follows up.
- Setup: Hallo’s AI interview picks up to five soft skills and generates the questions for you. In Greet you write the scenarios and decide what gets scored.
- Price: Hallo is custom pricing by test volume, with a demo first. Greet is $99/month for 100 sessions, and you can start today.
What Hallo is
Hallo (Hallo Inc.) is an assessment platform for hiring and education. Its flagship is the Hallo Language Test, a CEFR-aligned test of speaking, writing, reading, listening and typing. Around it sit skills assessments (cognitive, personality, situational judgement, typing), AI interviews with an avatar, coding interviews, and an “AI Agent” that builds a custom assessment from a prompt. Customers listed on its site include TaskUs, Teleperformance, JetBlue, Berlitz and Trip.com.
It does that well. Language coverage is wide, the scores map to a standard employers already know, proctoring includes ID checks and a second camera, and it carries SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. If you need a defensible language level for a BPO or a placement test for a school, it is a strong choice.
Where it falls short
From its product and pricing pages:
- Generic soft skills. The AI interview has you choose up to five traits from a list, and the questions are generated around them, each scored 1 to 10. That measures “communication” in general, not how someone handles your customer’s problem.
- Built around a test. Language, skills and interviews are separate products you bundle. It is a test day, not a conversation about the work.
- No price on the page. Every tier, from 10 tests a month up, is “request pricing”, so you book a demo before you can try it on a role.
What Greet does instead
The interview is the job
You write up to 10 scenarios or questions, and the AI plays a role from the job. A guest whose room is not ready. A patient confused about a bill. A prospect who says your price is too high. The AI listens, pushes back, and asks a follow-up when an answer is thin. You hear the candidate’s English and their judgement in the same five minutes.
You choose what gets scored
Define the assessment blocks: English level, communication, product knowledge, problem-solving, or anything specific to the role. Greet scores them from the dialogue and audio, and returns a match rate, summary, transcript and recording (Pro and above). Turn on Block Copy & Paste or Camera Required if you worry about outside help.
Short, and easy to take
Pick 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes (10 needs Pro; 15 and 30 need Enterprise). Candidates start from a browser or phone whenever they want. They can type if they cannot talk, and Push to Talk helps in noisy rooms.
Start without a sales call
Sign up, write a scenario, and take it yourself with Play. $99/month covers 100 sessions and $200/month covers 500. Export results as CSV or PDF.
Use both if you like
If you need a certified CEFR level in Tagalog or Portuguese, keep Hallo for that. Send the candidates who pass a Greet link to hear how they handle the actual calls.

Which one to pick
Pick Hallo if you need a standard language level across many languages, a placement test for a school, or one vendor for language, cognitive and coding tests.
Pick Greet if the role is mostly talking to people, and you want to hear candidates handle the real situations, not earn a score on traits picked from a list.
Try it on one role
- Pick a customer-facing role where good language scores still turn into weak hires.
- Write the call your best person handles every day.
- Take it yourself with Play and listen back.
- Send the link to this week’s applicants, or to the ones who passed Hallo.
Create your Greet account and hear your next applicants.
